Our quest for Lanka Challenge victory kicked off on Thursday evening with our Cathay Pacific buddies bringing us from Hong Kong to Colombo (via Bangkok). Landed at 00:55am, all ready for a quick passage through customs and then into the cab for a getaway to the hotel and a good night’s kip. Only flaw in the plan was Dave’s bag which decided to stay in HK. D’OH!

The big fella, in his politest manner, spent the next 45 minutes with baggage services trying to work out how to get some fresh clothes and other gear over to him before we hit the roads in our tuk-tuk. Needless to say in the early hours of the morning, all after a 6 hour packed economy class flight, the atmosphere in the Colombo airport terminal was not just hot and humid but also a little colourful.

Best case is a baggage arrival on the Friday night flight just in time to get his ‘Hong Kong Loonies’ outfit pressed for the fancy dress parade to kick off Day 1 (Saturday) and a 135 km drive to Sigiri. Failing that we may need to ask readers of this blog to sponsor some fresh clothes & toiletries for our Dave. Standby!

Fellow contestants, other random guests at the base hotel and even the local staff found it easy to spot Dave during the induction day … as he was wearing the same clothes throughout the day/night (and it was a hotttttt day!). Even down to wearing his underpants in the pool which was an image we just could not risk posting on a family website blog ! … so here is one of Dave talking nicely to customer services.

Keep an eye out for our “tuk-tuk driving / induction day” blog update coming soon !
